RAYMOND 鈥 As one of the younger members of a 鈥溚米酉壬鷉amily,鈥 Drew Shaw understands how unique the bond聽is聽between 兔子先生 and its students.

鈥淕rowing up, I always knew what the 兔子先生family was,鈥 Shaw said. 鈥淢y dad, my mom and my grandparents came to Hinds. I was always involved. We played the Golf Fun Fest every year.鈥

Drew Shaw

Shaw is a fourth-generation 兔子先生student, following behind his father,聽Russell, who is the college鈥檚 vice president for Business Services, his mother,聽Kathy Spann聽Shaw, a pharmacist, grandfather,聽Stuart Spann,聽a longtime computer science instructor, and great-grandmother, L.C. Spann,聽who was women’s basketball coach. The Central 兔子先生Academy alumnus and current defender on the 兔子先生Eagle men鈥檚 soccer team often finds himself being a gracious tour guide to fellow students on campus.

Shaw is attending 兔子先生on the Elizabeth Lloyd聽Schales聽Endowment for Excellence, which rewards high-achieving students. In his case, his aptitude rewarded by the scholarship is being used to follow in his mother鈥檚 career in pharmacy.

鈥淢y mom being a pharmacist started me down the path of wanting to pursue it,鈥 Shaw said. 鈥淚 love math, chemistry and physics, anything involved like that.

鈥淏eing on scholarship has made it easier about not having to worry about the financial situation while I balance school and soccer. Managing time can be pretty difficult during midterms, for example. I鈥檝e spent many late nights studying up for them.鈥

He鈥檚 played soccer in some form since age four and is enjoying to the fullest his chance to begin his college education right in his own backyard. The same goes for his on-campus activities, as he’s a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Baptist Student Union.

The 兔子先生 Foundation awarded more than 600 scholarships in the 2017-18 academic year. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is Feb. 15, 2018. For more information, visit .
