UTICA – The baseball field at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s Utica Campus will be re-dedicated to honor retired baseball coach George McQuitter of Jackson at 10 a.m. Oct. 23 at the site of the field. The field will be called the Grantham-McQuitter Field.
McQuitter was head baseball coach at Utica Junior College for nine years, beginning in 1980, and associate head coach for two more years when the baseball program at the Utica Campus merged with the Raymond Campus’ program in 1989.
He inherited a team that went 0-21 the year before his arrival. In his second season (1981), McQuitter led his team to a District Championship, which was followed by two more District titles in 1982 and 1984.
McQuitter’s 1985 team posted a 49-9 record, winning a South Division Championship with a 27-1 South Division record. He posted a 284-145 record in nine seasons.
As associate head coach in 1989, alongside head coach Rick Clarke, McQuitter helped coach the baseball team based on the Raymond Campus to a State, Region 23 and Eastern District championship as well as a Junior College World Series appearance, the first Junior College World Series appearance in school and state history.
