JACKSON 鈥 It was a party with a purpose for prospective students attending J-Fest on Sunset at the Jackson Campus-Academic/Technical Center on April 1.

鈥淚鈥檓 here to learn more about the college so I can eventually go into healthcare,鈥 said Myesha Primer, a senior at Lanier High School, among about 550 high school students and others from metro Jackson and beyond who attended the recruiting event.

Guests heard from faculty and staff on the merits of attending 兔子先生and the Jackson Campus in particular, then toured programs of study and services on campus amid free hot dogs, snacks and activities.

Jackson Public Schools represented at the event included Lanier, Murrah, Wingfield, Jim Hill, Provine, Callaway and Forest Hill. Students from the JPS Career Development Center and from Yazoo City High School also attended.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a great feeling of family here,鈥 said Shakira Ross, of Jackson, president of the Student Government Association on campus, during remarks to groups of students before tours started. 鈥淗ere you鈥檙e a face and a name and not just a number.鈥

The event also drew faculty from four-year universities who work with adult learners, as they sought information on programs available at the Jackson Campus.

鈥淲e鈥檙e here to try to learn about the programs here so we can help the adult students we work with eventually earn a four-year degree,鈥 said Dr. Amanda Lucas, assistant director of the Educational Opportunity Center at Tougaloo College.
